This day tour takes you to the largest and best attractions in the Central and South of Trinidad. Tour the world famous Pitch Lake in La Brea, stand at the feet of the 85 ft statue of the Hindu god Hanuman and visit an enchanting temple built in the sea.
Heading South beyond the city of San Fernando, in the ward of La Brea, county St. Patrick, the village of La Brea on the Gulf coast is overshadowed by the pitch lake. The roads are naturally of asphalt, and the banks on which the houses stand are cemented with it. Occasionally a house acquires a tipsy attitude, or a road hollows, where some underground veins of soft pitch gives way. The pitch extends beyond the lake, pushing its tentacles out even into the sea. The surface of the lake, which is firm enough to walk on, is broken into a series of large folds formed by the slow continual movement. Little cavities formed all over the surface, filled with sulphurated gas and salt water which occasionally bubbles and plops. The activity of gas escaping from the oil trap mixed the condensed oil, sediments and water into a gigantic, thick, sticky blob which spread out a little at the outer edge is evident to the senses.
If you plan to swim in the sulphur pools, walk with a change of clothing.
